SO IT’S YOUR FIRST MASSAGE?
(WHAT TO EXPECT?)
by Kathleen Strickler, Licensed Massage Therapist

While in massage school (National Massage Therapy Institute), I was taught many interesting and useful things like  the muscles of the human body, the different systems of the body (urinary, nervous systems, etc., etc.,), areas where pressure should not be applied (contraindicated) how to properly drape a client while on the table etc.  It was working with the pubic in practice, however, that I learned how to ‘tune in’ to a client’s body’s needs.

When you are on the massage table, you may at first feel self conscious as you only have a few items of cloth over your body (sheet, blanket and underpants).  But under a licensed massage therapist’s care, you can be assured that you are always comfortably covered and treated with care.  If, at any time, anything were to feel uncomfortable, you should express this and adjustments will be made.  Whether it is heat, pressure or area of focus, a professional massage therapist is dedicated to ‘bring to the table’ a service that will enhance your state of well-being!

After reviewing an intake form filled out by the client including health concerns and goals, the client and the massage therapist discuss areas of concern and goals for your session.  This can span from general relaxation to relieve tired/sore muscles and much more.  Personally and especially if it is a client’s first massage, I invite them to “do more of nothing they have ever done in their life.”  In this mindset the client can just ALLOW the process to happen.  Not only are you ‘in good hands’ (no, this is not Allstate) with a professional licensed massage therapist, you are in “excellent hands”.  With 15 years’ experience, I have never had a dissatisfied client!  My goal is to help you feel better.

When a therapeutic plan is in place, and after being provided a few minutes to prepare and lay comfortably on a heated massage table under both a sheet and a blanket (with proper support for face and legs),  I usually start with my client positioned face down and I with the client’s back.  The back will first be undraped, massage cream applied and then the back massaged.  The back will then be re-draped and the legs massaged (First one leg and then the other).  After the legs the client is asked to turn over while the drape is held in place for you. Then the neck/shoulders and arms, are addressed.  Each area is undraped then re-draped before moving on to the next area.

People often question the difference between massage modalities:  most commonly in question is the difference between Deep Tissue massage and Swedish Massage.  This can vary from therapist to therapist, but I will summarize here my view of each modality.

Swedish massage is a slow-paced massage with wider, longer strokes aimed more at calming, soothing and relaxing in a general way.  Pressure can vary depending on client preference but generally Swedish Massage uses a light to moderate pressure.

Deep Tissue Massage, on the other hand, applies moderate to deep pressure to troubled areas.  The pace may be quicker compared to Swedish, but may vary depending what each area of the client’s body needs and how much time is scheduled.  You may be asked to “breathe into the move” as the pressure is applied.  Also, the client may relax just as much with deep tissue as you would with Swedish.  This really can vary, client to client, as preferences and tolerances indicate.  One note here:  the client should not be in severe pain prior to and while receiving a Deep Tissue Massage!  The client should always speak up if something is uncomfortable for them! Some clients may be nervous thinking Deep Tissue Massage is going to be painful (either they had a bad experience or just think “that’s the way it is supposed to be”) but that is not true!  If the pressure is causing pain, the massage will not be therapeutic. The correct amout of pressure is the key!

To talk or not to talk During a massage?  Unless you have a question or concern that arises massage is best performed in a quiet room with soft music playing.  This allows the client to “Zone Out” which is more conducive to relaxation and allowing the body and mind to heal and revitalize.  A client may assume that the massage therapist bored and wishes to chat and will strike up a conversation.  This is unnecessary so just relax and enjoy.  People are sometime nervous their massage and may want to ask some questions, which is fine.  But to truly reap the benefits of a good massage, quiet, in my opinion, is the way to go!

Personally, I recommend massage at least once a month for routine maintenance of homeostasis (balance of health), and more often for more intense issues that may have existed for a while or that have developed. Remember, your health is an ongoing process just like maintaining your car. Take care of your body and it will serve you well.

SmartShield
Personal Protection System™

Defensive Tactics and Personal Protection Training

We live in an increasingly dangerous world. It seems that law enforcement usually arrives after the fact and is therefore incapable of protecting us the vast majority of the time. Movies, television and video games have played a role in the desensitizing of people to the real tragedy and painful aftermath of violent crime. Abductions, beatings, robberies, rapes and murders happen around us daily. Virtually every victim of violent crime was caught unprepared and off guard. Those who have been beaten, robbed, raped or murdered obviously thought that it would not happen to them or they would have been more conscientious about their safety that day and every other. We leave our homes for work or recreation; we send our children to school and off to college assuming that someone will be looking out for their safety. That attitude can and has often led to tragedy. As well, it is important to remember that not all violent crime happens in high crime or impoverished areas. Heinous crimes happen every day in middle class and upscale neighborhoods. In truth… no one is really looking out for you or your children. Personal responsibility and preparedness on each individual’s part is essential in our increasingly dangerous world of terrorism and violent crime.

The SmartShield Personal Protection Method (Which includes the “Six Zone Safeguard System” created in the mid-1980s by Grandmaster Holder as a means of teaching the average person practical defensive tactics), is a practical and timely way to provide higher levels of safety for you and those you love. Our program helps participants to increase their level of safety and to increase the rate of survival when confronted by an attacker (or attackers). Military personal, law enforcement, professional executive protection agents and everyday men, women and children have benefitted from this training program. This system does not rely on physical strength or size. No martial arts or special background is needed to effectively utilize this system. As well, training is done in one day seminars, so extensive time and long-term commitment is unnecessary. Look for more news about this great program in our next newsletter.
