Basics Of Developing Your Communication Skills

The ability to convey your thoughts and feelings clearly, listen effectively, argue productively, resolve conflicts, stay on topic and achieve common goals are essential in interpersonal relationships. Having the tools to better, manage anger and frustration, empathize and to effectively negotiate can stop differences of opinion from escalating into full blown arguments or fights.

Personal differences make life interesting, but can also cause conflict. Destructive arguments leave scars that are difficult to repair. Communication and listening skills are essential. Even though discussions are generally more productive than arguments, even arguments can be constructive and help you to better understand your spouse, friends, family, coworkers etc. if you follow a few simple rules. You can gain the ability to manage anger and frustration, empathize and to effectively negotiate by following a few simple guidelines.

Listen
It’s important to listen, not just to hear. Too often when one person is speaking, the other has stopped listening because he or she is already deciding what they want to say. Try your best to listen to what is said completely without translating that message into what you think they meant before you respond. It’s important that you help to make the other person feel heard.

Defensive Reactions
Avoid becoming defensive. Usually when someone becomes defensive their mouth opens and their ears close. It is nonproductive to interpret a different opinion or position as an attack.

Honesty
Often time people will put an inaccurate spin on the other person’s statements in order to make the other person sound less credible. This is dishonest and destructive to the process. For Example.: Person says: I think what you did was stupid. Other person replies: So you’re saying I’m stupid.Although they sound similar they are two totally different statements. When a person mischaracterizes in this way, it takes the focus off of the real issue at hand and the focus shifts to addressing the inaccurate statement within the debate/argument. If you truly believe in your position you shouldn’t have to put a slanted spin, or in any way distort what the other person said. If you find yourself doing that you might want to reevaluate the validity of your position.

But, It’s Because, But That’s Different
Avoid the But/Because trap. Most people seem to think that when something happens to them it’s somehow “Different” than when it applies to others. Strangely it may apply to the rest of the world but there’s some subtle difference when applied to them personally. That’s where the personal Inner Lie begins.

Look For Solutions For A Great Future Rather Than Problems From The Past.
Think about it… How frequently it is within human nature to hear people say, “The Problem Is”… Wherever we focus our thoughts and energy that is what we will give power to. It is important, therefore, to have the mindset of looking forward for solutions rather that backwards for problems.

Ask Yourself, Would You Rather Be Happy Or Right?
If There Is A Difference Of Opinion, Decide… Would you rather be happy or right. Often, a short while into an argument, people can’t even remember what the original argument was about. The participants become so focused on proving their point (Winning) that the priority of the day becomes proving they are right rather than solving the problem. Keep in mind as well that if you “Win” you have just made the other person a LOSER! That could be especially destructive when it involves a friend, spouse etc. As well, no matter how right you think you are in that moment, always entertain the possibility that you could be wrong. Realistically… The actual truth usually lies somewhere in the middle.

What effect will this have on the overall outcome of my life?
Most differences of opinion are really about petty issues. In the bigger picture ask yourself… how significant is the issue at hand?

Parents… What would you tell your child to do about a similar communications problem, in a similar situation?
We (parents) usually find it easy to give our children our wizened advice. Perhaps we could use a dose of our own advice.

Look For Common Ground
If you look for a place to agree, it’s a sound starting position.

Physician Supervised Rapid Weight Loss Facts

People used to think that if they eat less and exercise more they would lose weight. Would it surprise you to find out that that’s not totally true. Eating too little can often be as problematic as eating too much. With the exception of the hCG rapid loss program, most restricted calorie diets have a negative side effect. When someone does not eat enough food to fuel their body, their body goes into starvation mode and here’s what happens.

1. When a person’s body has too little fuel, in anticipation of starvation, the metabolic rate of that person slows in order to consume less calories and conserve fuel (Fat). That person is now burning less calories every moment of every day than they previously were. As well, this often results in the person being more lethargic and less likely to exercise and be active.

2. That person’s body will attempt to hold onto the fat cells, bloating existing cells and creating new fat cells.

3. Because that person’s body still needs nutrition, their body begins to break down muscle tissue and consume it is fuel. Note: Muscle weighs more than fat therefore the person may lose weight but not be losing the fat they desire to lose. As well because muscle burns fat 24 and 7 in an attempt to maintain itself, as muscle mass decreases so does the ability to burn calories.

In brief, hCG rapid weight loss program is the exception among restricted calorie diets. Here’s why… Although the patient may be orally consuming only 500 or 600 cal per day, the hCG facilitates the person’s body breaking down and consuming their own body fat at a rate of approximately 2500 cal per day. For that reason the person is actually getting around 3000 cal a day. Because of this, patients are usually not hungry during the cycle of hCG, and they don’t go into starvation mode thereby avoiding those nasty side effects. The hCG rapid weight loss programs should always be done under the supervision of a physician. There are many other benefits to the hCG rapid weight loss program. Wing Chun Combat Skills (Applications for both contact sparring and for Hand To Hand Combat will be covered). If you would like to participate in sparring… Bring 14 oz or larger boxing gloves (leather only / no vinyl), foam foot gear and a double mouthpiece. Headgear is recommended but not required. Although sparring intensity will be moderate, proper gear is essential.  Time permitting there will be a meditation session at the end of the class.

General Information and Policies for all BodySmart Wellness workshops,
seminars, classes etc. At BodySmart Wellness Location

At BodySmart Wellness Physical Location(s): Please arrive no less than 15 – 20 minutes before the start of any BodySmart Wellness class, workshop or seminar so that you can be checked in by starting time. Walking in after the start of a workshop is distracting to both the participants and the instructor or presenter. With classes, workshops or seminars that require calm and quiet (e.g.: Meditation, Higher self, etc.) the door will be closed and locked once class commences and no further entry will be permitted. Late arrivals will forfeit their registration/ticket. There will be no refunds of tuition if this occurs; however, the late arriving participant may receive credit for tuition paid towards another qualifying BodySmart Wellness class, workshop or seminar of the same fee or less… So please arrive 15 – 20 minutes early.

Depending on the workshop, class or seminar, usually there is reserved seating for only 15 – 20 participants. All participants must be pre-registered and pre-paid. Your email confirmation or receipt from our registration site is your ticket to the event so you must bring it with you. Absolutely no tickets/registrations will be sold at the door (no walk-ins). All registrations / Ticket purchases can made online through www.BodySmartWellness.com and/or www.MeowLearning.com  In the event a workshop, seminar, or class is cancelled those registered will be notified in advance. Should that happen the participant can either request a refund for the event or receive a credit toward another event of the same cost or no more than $10.00 more than the event they originally registered for. Registering at least 3 or more days in advance is greatly appreciated. Ticket sales for events ends 24 hours prior to the event.

Refund Policy:
All sales (including but not limited to: programs, appointments, services, sessions, workshop, classes, merchandise) are final. We will gladly replace any defective product with one identical or as close to identical as possible if it is brought to our attention within 72 hours. Unused portions of items such as supplements must be returned in the original container to receive a replacement or office credit at BodySmart Wellness’s discretion. Since success is a joint effort between the provider and the participant, or customer, we offer no guarantees stated or implied.

Liability waiver and Indemnification :
I have read and understand the information contained in this document.  I agree to hold harmless and for myself and my heirs or assignees and to indemnify and not to sue BodySmart Wellness LLC and/or Dr. Philip Holder, Dr. Marie Kimelheim and/or any officers, associates, helpers, including but not limited to, assistants, landlords or hosts for any reason as a result of my participation in any workshop, seminar  program/session(s) etc. etc. whether online on physical site or any other. Any medical problems have been disclosed in writing to the BodySmart Wellness Administrators in advance of participation. This includes, but is not limited to, Heart Disease, H.I.V./AIDS, Hepatitis , Tuberculosis etc.

Misc.
Guests, rides/transportation, children of the attendee etc., are not permitted to enter the facility or wait at the event (or in the halls outside the event). Only registered, paid attendees will be admitted. Children under the age of 16 are not permitted to attend most workshops, so if you are anticipating registering/bringing anyone younger it is important that you ask if children under the age of 16 are permitted to attend that event before purchasing their ticket.
As a courtesy to other patients clients, and students, and to maintain the serene atmosphere that we of striving for, absolutely no cell phone use is permitted in the office. Cell phones must be turned OFF (not on vibrate or silent) before entering the office/facility. If you must make a call, please step into the hallway during a structured break. Please do not go in and out during the presentation. It is distracting to others.

IMPORTANT: It is prohibited for Clients/Patients/Customers/Attendees etc. to bring cameras or recording devices into the office or to any BodySmart Wellness event at any location. BodySmart Wellness LLC, Dr. Holder and/or Dr Kimelheim reserve the right to discontinue services to anyone found doing so with no refund of fees paid or balance due. Also, phones must be completely turned off during session (not on low or vibrate etc.). Interruptions caused by Clients/Patients/Customers/Attendees etc. phone, may result in the immediate ejection from the event without refund or the option for credit for another event.

Marie A. Kimelheim, M.D. is a licensed psychiatrist who is also trained in Anti-aging and Regenerative Medicine, Holistic Psychiatry and Functional Medicine.
